Keywords for SEO Are Critical to Website Success

I have mentioned before that I believe having the right keywords for your website is critically important but as I've also said before it is an area many folks continue to struggle with.

Buyer keywords are crucial from our perspective because when these folks visit your site they are ready to buy. You still need to convert them with the quality of your site, however. Buyer phrases cannot be the only keywords you rely on though because it may take away from the user's experience on your site.

You see, broad phrase searchers are not as far along on the buying process as buyer keyword searchers but if your site pages are using buyer keywords only the visitors experience will not be very good. You need to make sure to use other keywords as well that add to the user's experience. If you are selling golf clubs for example and all you do is use keywords of the most popular clubs then visitors are left with limited interesting content. Add keywords such as golf balls, golf caps, golf apparel, etc. and your users now are experiencing a broader range of information and Google looks at this as a very good thing. You can add information on the golf swing as well.

Your visitors will like your site more and will be more inclined to share it with friends and may also post it on social sites such as Google+, Facebook or Twitter. This will help entice Google to rank your site even higher bringing more visitors and possibly more sales.

When choosing keywords just ask this question: Is my keyword diverse enough to allow for the creation of good user content and able to draw the traffic I need to make sales? Thinking like this will go a long way in giving Google what it needs while helping you be successful.

Google Panda has done an effective job of getting rid of many crappy sites off the top ten page but they still have a ways to go. This is a work in progress so make sure your site is ready to replace those crap sites when Google removes them. You want to be the quality site next in line to take their place.

Google is not targeting affiliate and AdSense sites like many people think. These sites are being hit because they are not built around quality but around quantity and that no longer applies for Google. Make sure you are not one of those low quality sites Google is targeting and you will be just fine.

Quick Lesson on Anchor Text Links and Targeting Keywords

So what exactly is anchor text? Simply put, it's the specific text that makes up the link that is clicked on when a user visits your website. It's important in SEO because it contains important information that aids search engines in determining what keyword terms your website should rank for.

I decided to write this article to share three important tips that many online marketers and SEO heads forget to take into account when they're building backlinks.

1. Diversify Your Anchors. Your site should not have the exact same anchored links pointing to you. It's not natural. This is why you must use a nice mix of anchors to build a natural looking link profile. You might have one or two principal keywords that you're aiming for. Find up to at least 5 variations of that keyword term or related terms and build links using those alternative terms as well. The majority of your links should use your principal keyword, just make sure at least 10% to 20% of backlinks contain variants of your targeted keyword.

In general, your site will earn all kinds of links over time which will produce a natural variety in the anchors of your in-bound links. Just make sure any authority links you build manually use different anchors with your main keyword being used most frequently.

2. Make Images Count. When you place linked images or banner ads on other sites, you can't use a typical text anchor since the link is mainly comprised of an image. In this case, take advantage of the TITLE and ALT tags for the image. Make sure they include your keywords. Keep it reasonable, don't stuff the tags.

3. DoFollow or NoFollow? They all matter. Don't get caught up with belief that a NoFollow link offers no SEO benefit. That just not true. A natural map of links pointing to any given site should contain both kind of links. DoFollow links pass PageRank juice which will help with your page's overall PageRank. With search engine optimization, PR isn't everything. Solid links via NoFollow blog commenting and NoFollow text links on big authority sites WILL leave an impression with Google and friends. When it comes to links you want every valid link you can get. Don't forget that important rule.

Hopefully the tips above are helpful. Some of them are quite obvious, others might require some tweaking when it comes to your link building strategy. Apply the above and watch your rankings benefit from your smart use of text anchors.
